Music Video Month, part 2

The second music video we shot in January is Stolin Augnablik (Stolen moments) with up and coming singer/performer Unnur Eggertsdóttir.

The plot is about a girl who’s fallen in love with a douche who doesn’t respect her… In short at least :)  The few good moments they’ve shared feel like a shadow from the past to her and she’s thinking what she should do.

We only had two actors this time and a very small crew shooting over one weekend.  Everyone had a great time even though we were on an extremely tight schedule to finish our shooting.  January in Iceland isn’t the most logical time to be shooting anything outside really. It’s about 4-5 hours of usable shooting conditions (at best).  Besides… it’s freezing cold outside!

We had a ridiculous amount of locations all spread around the Reykjavík Capital area.  Starting our day shooting inside at a night club in downtown Reykjavík, we then moved outside to shoot as much as we could while daylight allowed and when we lost the sun, moved back indoors to shoot more interior shots at a friends home.  There wasn’t really any room for error because we has so many exterior shots to do.

We shot everything on the Sony F3 with Zeiss Ultra Primes.  Awesome camera, awesome lenses.  It’s hard to go back to my “cheap” glass now :)  All the lenses (18, 25, 35, 50 and 85mm) are T1.2.  Incredibly fast!  When put on the F3 in S-Log mode and ISO 1600,  we could shoot in ridiculously low light.  F.x. the shot at the fireplace (at about 1:06). The camera could easily see more then we could with our eyes.

We used the Zacuto EVF for handheld monitoring and the SoundDevices Pix 240i external recorder,  which has a great IPS display.
Also used the Pix for recording of course.  3G-SDI signal from the F3 recorded as ProRes 4444.  Pretty incredible codec.  Combined with Sony’s S-Log picture profile, it gives you unbelievable latitude in post.  It completely blew my mind when we started grading,  it almost feels like grading raw.

Music Video Month, part 1

That’s how January felt to me.

Me and my friend Hörður,  with whom I’ve started the production company Novus,  shot two music videos back to back in early January.  I’ll talk about one of those in this post and a second one will come later :)

1. VÍ Will Rock You

This video was very fun to make.  But very hard at the same time.  Pre-Production time was limited and when it came to shooting we had at most 20-30 people on set which put the tension a bit high for our small crew.  Most of these didn’t have a lot of experience on a video shoot and got a bit confused when we had to shoot everything out of sequence :)

We had two main locations.  First one was at a lawyers office in Reykjavík where most of the story in the video takes place.  Starting at around 8-9pm we shot until about 2 in the morning when we had to leave because of security reasons.  Then had around 2-3 hours of sleep until we were back on set to shoot the dancers at the other location,  a theater in downtown Reykjavík,  just to have to return to the offices for pickups that didn’t get shot the night before.

It will not surprise me if you get confused about the “story” that’s being told here :)  The main purpose of the video was to draw attention to a student musical that these kids play in.  So just be open minded when you watch it ;)

This was our first ever Red shoot and our conclusion from it is this: “That’s one heavy camera” :)  That aside it’s pretty incredible how much is possible to pull from the image it produces.  We shot everything in 24p and edited in Premiere CS6,  which is a breeze now that it can edit R3Ds natively.  The amount of data was of course massive though.  Grading was all done within the free version of BlackMagic’s DaVinci Resolve 9.

Grading in Resolve is like the best cream on a cake I’ve seen.  It literally works like magic (I’ve never been speechless before while watching a tracker in progress).  I would bet that it’s the most powerful free software in the world.

I always like to quote Peter Jackson when the deadline of a project looms closer.  And it was more appropriate for this project then anything I’ve done before.

“You have to deliver your movie in time.  The trick is to deliver it just in time”

We pulled an all-nighter and delivered the finished video about 15 minutes before it was premiered in front of a few hundred students :)
